Jerez de los Caballeros

Jerez de los Caballeros is one of the most fascinating towns in all of Extremadura. With a population of roughly ten thousand, it stands in the Sierra Suroeste region, in the south of the province of Badajoz. Wander through its winding streets to discover its rich heritage, fine cuisine and the picturesque surrounding farmland.

Jerez de los Caballeros is justifiably proud of its long and illustrious history, where fact and legend merge. It was declared a listed Historical and Artistic Monumental site in 1966.

Visitors to the town cannot fail to be enthralled by its beauty. In the nineteenth century, the American writer Washington Irving described Jerez de los Caballeros as one of the most charming towns anywhere in Spain. And that charm still lives on in its buildings, streets and people. A century later, after a visit to the town, Cervantes Prize winner, Luís de Rosales wrote:

“Whitewash on the walls

And blue in the sky

How well you deserve your name

Jerez de los Caballeros!”

Templar fortress

Built by the Order of the Temple in the thirteenth century on the site of a Moorish citadel. The largest of its defensive towers is the "Bloody Tower", so called because it was here that the last of the Knights Templar were said to have had their throats

Church of San Bartolomé (St Bartholomew):

The early fifteenth-century church of St Bartholomew, patron of the town, stands at the highest point in the town. The colourful main facade and baroque tower are particularly fine.

Church of San Miguel Arcángel (St. Michael the Archangel)

San Miguel church dates from the fifteenth century. It features majestic altarpieces, frescos and choir stalls belonging to the Order of St James, and in the exterior a narrow tower and three fine doorways.
