Marvão

Visitors to Marvão cannot help but be captivated by the spectacular landscape, white houses and the natural and built heritage of one of the most iconic towns in Alentejo. The enormous walls and bastions encircling the town have preserved the unique character of this medieval fortress.

The town and farmland of Marvão stand out from the surrounding Serra de São Mamede Nature Park. In a valley to the south of the castle escarpment is the Roman villa of Ammaia and both the museum and the ruins themselves are well worth a visit. Also to the south are the Apartadura Reservoir and summit of Serra de São Mamede. Gastronomic events are staged throughout the year using seasonal produce but the most important event is the chestnut fair, held during the second weekend of November.
